Fenner's Cricket Ground
Fenner's is more than just a cricket field. It is a place where students have played cricket for a long time. The ground has seen many exciting matches and has a rich history.
A Look Back: Fenner's History
Before Fenner's, the Cambridge University Cricket Club played at other places in Cambridge. These included the University Ground and Parker's Piece.
How Fenner's Got Started
In 1846, a man named Francis Fenner rented a piece of land. This land used to be a cherry orchard. He wanted to build a cricket ground there. By 1848, he rented the new ground to the Cambridge University Cricket Club. That same year, Fenner's hosted its first "first-class cricket" match. This is a high level of cricket played between top teams. Cambridge University played against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
By 1856, a wooden building called a pavilion was built. It was 40 feet long, painted blue, and had a slanted roof. This building gave players a place to change and relax.
Who Owns Fenner's Now?
Since 1894, Fenner's has been owned by a special company. This company is called the Cambridge University Cricket and Athletic Company. It is a private company that includes members from both the cricket and athletics clubs at Cambridge University.
What Fenner's Offers
Fenner's is not just an outdoor cricket field. It also has other useful facilities for players.
Indoor Training and Cool Grass Patterns
The ground has a special indoor cricket school. This school has three lanes where players can practice their batting and bowling. It's great for training, especially when the weather is bad.
The person who takes care of the Fenner's ground, called the groundsman, was very creative. He was one of the first to mow the grass in cool patterns. This technique is now used in many sports stadiums around the world. It makes the fields look amazing!
Recent News: Land Changes
In August 2024, there was news about some land next to Fenner's. The University sold a part of this land to Hughes Hall, another college. After this, some people started a petition to stop new buildings from being built on that land.
