Fermín Martín Piera facts for kids
Fermín Martín-Piera (born July 7, 1954 – died July 19, 2001) was a Spanish scientist who specialized in studying beetles. He was especially interested in a group called Scarabaeoidea, which includes dung beetles.
He spent his time understanding how these beetles are classified (this is called taxonomy), how they are related to each other (systematics), and their evolutionary history (phylogeny). He also loved learning about where these beetles came from and how they spread across different places over time. This is known as historical biogeography.
Fermín Martín-Piera also studied how different groups of dung beetles live together in their natural homes. He wanted to find out what makes some communities of beetles have many different kinds of species, while others have fewer. This is part of community ecology.
He was a very important person for the Fauna Iberica project, which is a big effort to list all the animals in Spain and Portugal. He helped coordinate the part of the project that focused on insects. He also wrote the first book about the Scarabaeoidea beetles found in Spain and Portugal.
