His Family and Kingdom
Ffernfael's father was King Idwal (or Ithel) ap Morgan. King Idwal ruled over several areas, including Glywyssing, Gwent, and Ergyng.
It's believed that King Idwal might have divided his kingdom among his sons. Ffernfael likely received a large part of Gwent to rule. His brother, Rhys, may have received Glywyssing. Another idea is that Ffernfael's brothers, Rhodri and Rhys, and his nephew, Brochfael, might have ruled Gwent for a while before Ffernfael took over. Ffernfael's queen was named Ceingaer.

Records from the "Annals of Wales" mention Ffernfael's death. Historians believe he died around the year 775.
