Fiddler's Elbow is a special island found in the River Thames in England. It is the biggest of several islands located near Sandford Lock. This area is close to a village called Kennington in Oxfordshire.

The island gets its unique name from its shape. It looks a bit like a "leg of lamb" or even a bent arm, which might remind you of a fiddler's elbow! It starts wide and then becomes very narrow as you go upstream.

Where is Fiddler's Elbow Located?

Fiddler's Elbow is part of the famous River Thames. This river flows through much of southern England. The island sits just upstream from Sandford Lock, which is a structure that helps boats move up and down the river.

The island is in Oxfordshire, a county known for its beautiful countryside and the historic city of Oxford. Its location makes it a quiet spot on the busy river.

What Makes the Island Special?

Fiddler's Elbow is more than just one island. It is part of a small group of islands. The main river channel, where boats travel, flows along the east side of Fiddler's Elbow.

On the west side, there is a strong flow of water called the main weir stream. This stream leads to a deeper pool known as the Sandford Lasher. Smaller streams also cross the lower part of the island. These smaller streams actually create two extra tiny islands!

Nature and Scenery

Fiddler's Elbow is a natural, undeveloped place. It is covered in open space and beautiful meadowland. This means you will find grassy areas and possibly wildflowers.

It is a peaceful spot, perfect for enjoying nature. The island offers a glimpse into the natural beauty of the River Thames. It is a great example of how rivers can create interesting landforms like islands.
