The Story of Filco Foods
Early Days and Growth
In 1964, the main store moved to Boverton Road. It changed to a self-service style, meaning customers could pick their own items. The store's name became Philip Jones Foodmarkets Unlimited. At this time, they were part of the Spar group.
More stores opened over the years. A store in Cowbridge opened in 1968. Then came Bryntirion in 1970, North Cornelly in 1973, and Talbot Green in 1979.
Joining the Nisa Group
In 1979, Philip Jones Foodmarkets Unlimited left the Spar group. They joined the NISA buying group instead. This group helps stores buy products together.
New stores continued to open. The Sarn store opened in 1982. The Caerau store followed in 1990.
New Leadership and Name Change
Phillip Jones, the founder, passed away in 1997. After that, Elanor Jones, Ian Hunt, and Elizabeth Hunt took over running the company.
In 1998, the Taibach store opened. Around this time, the store chain changed its name to Filco Supermarkets.
Fun Activities
Filco employees once made a fun training video. It was called Chariots of Filco. This video was inspired by the famous movie Chariots of Fire. They made it as part of their involvement in the Lloyds TSB Cardiff Half Marathon.
