About the Filodrillia stadialis Shell
The shell of Filodrillia stadialis is quite small. It usually grows to about 6.5 millimeters (about a quarter of an inch) long. Its width is around 3.0 millimeters.
Shell Shape and Color
This snail has a shell that looks like a small tower. Scientists call this "turreted." Its shape is also described as "ovate-fusiform." This means it's like an oval that tapers at both ends.
The shell is a dull white color. The very first part of the shell, called the protoconch, looks glassy and clear. This part stands out from the rest of the shell, which has a duller feel.
Shell Whorls and Patterns
The shell has six main spirals, or "whorls." Two of these whorls make up the protoconch. The whorls are a bit puffy and have a sharp angle near the top, which is called the shoulder.
The shell also has interesting patterns, known as "sculpture." There are five thin lines that go across a special area called the fasciole. Below the shoulder, there are thirteen spaced lines that get smaller as they go down the shell. Some of these lines even reach the upper parts of the whorls. You might also see faint, curved marks that fade away towards the bottom of the shell.
Shell Opening and Features
The opening of the shell is called the aperture. It is wide open and does not have a thick edge. The snail also has a deep and wide notch, called a sinus. The siphonal canal, which is a tube-like part, is short and open.
Where Filodrillia stadialis Lives
This sea snail lives only in Australia. It is found off the coast of New South Wales. When an animal or plant lives only in one specific area, it is called endemic to that place.
