A Look Back: Findlay Market's Story
Findlay Market first opened in 1852. The land for the market was given by General James Findlay and his wife, Jane Irwin Findlay.
The market building was built using a new way of building with iron frames. This was one of the first times this method was used in the United States. It's also one of the few buildings left that used this early iron frame style. A special bell from Cincinnati's very first market, the Pearl Street Market, now hangs in Findlay Market's bell tower.
The market is just north of downtown Cincinnati. It's in a neighborhood called Over-the-Rhine, which is famous for its many beautiful buildings.
What You Can Find at the Market
Findlay Market is open all year, from Tuesday through Sunday. Inside, there are about three dozen shops. They sell fresh meat, fish, chicken, fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheese, and special foods. You can also find foods from different countries.
On Saturdays and Sundays, from March to December, the market gets even bigger! It hosts a farmers' market outside. You can also find other outdoor sellers, street performers, and fun events.
A Cincinnati Tradition
The Findlay Market Opening Day Parade for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team is a big yearly event. Many people from all over the city come to Findlay Market. It's a place where people from different backgrounds meet and enjoy themselves.
In 2019, Newsweek magazine recognized Findlay Market as one of the top ten public markets in the world.
Market's Growth: A Busy Place
The area around Findlay Market is a busy place for business in Over-the-Rhine. In 2006, the Cincinnati City Council chose The Corporation for Findlay Market to help develop 39 city-owned properties nearby.
By 2010, every spot in the market was full, and it keeps growing! In 2004, the City of Cincinnati spent $16 million to make the market even better.
