What Made Finlarig Castle Special?
The Pit and the Oak Tree
Near the castle's north wall, there is a stone-lined pit. Legend says this pit was used for important prisoners. Common people who faced punishment were dealt with at a nearby oak tree.
The Breadalbane Mausoleum
Close to the castle, you can see what is left of the Breadalbane Mausoleum. A mausoleum is a building that holds graves. This one was built in 1829. It was made to look like old Tudor-style buildings. It stands where an earlier chapel and burial place once were. That first chapel was founded in 1523 by an ancestor of the Earls of Breadalbane, Sir Colin Campbell. Over many years, this brick building has fallen apart almost completely.
