Paroquial Suevo1
This old document, called the Parochiale Suevorum, tells us about the Council of Lugo.

The Council of Lugo was an important meeting of church leaders. It happened in 569 in the city of Lugo. This meeting was called by King Theodemir, who ruled the Suevic Kingdom. His main goal was to create more church areas, called dioceses, within his kingdom.

What Was the Council of Lugo?

The Council of Lugo was a special meeting. It brought together bishops and other church leaders. King Theodemir of the Suevi people organized it. The year was 569. The main reason for this meeting was to change how the church was set up in his kingdom. He wanted to add more dioceses. A diocese is an area that a bishop is in charge of.

Why Was This Council Held?

King Theodemir had a good reason for this change. Some parts of his Suevic Kingdom were under the control of bishops from a different kingdom. This was the Visigothic Kingdom. King Theodemir wanted to make his own kingdom stronger. He hoped that by having more dioceses fully inside his lands, his kingdom would become more united. This was a way to bring more power to his own rule.

The Important Document: Parochiale Suevorum

The records we have about this council are called the Parochiale Suevorum. This document is not a detailed report of the meeting. It doesn't list all the rules they agreed on. Instead, it is a list of the new dioceses that were created. It also has a short introduction.

Was the Document Real?

For a long time, historians wondered if the Parochiale Suevorum was a real document. Some older historians thought it was completely fake. But more recent experts believe it is true. One reason is that many of the new dioceses listed in the document show up again. They are mentioned in another important meeting, the Second Council of Braga, which happened in 572.

Some people think that the list of dioceses is correct. However, they believe the introduction to the document might have been added later. In some old copies, it even says that King Miro called the council. King Miro was Theodemir's successor. No matter if the document is fully real or not, we know one thing. The dioceses listed in it were definitely created. This happened sometime between the First Council of Braga in 561 and the Second Council of Braga in 572.
