The First National Bank Building is a really old and important building in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. It's located right in the middle of State House Square. Built in 1899, this building shows off a beautiful style called Beaux Arts architecture. It was also one of the very first buildings in Hartford to use a strong steel frame, which was a big deal back then! Because of its history and unique design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Discovering the First National Bank Building

The First National Bank Building stands on the north side of State House Square. It faces the famous Old State House in Hartford. This building is seven stories tall and made of strong brick and stone. Inside, it has a steel frame with special brick arches to make it even stronger.

A Look at its Design

The front of the building is a great example of Beaux Arts architecture. This style was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It often features grand designs and classical details. The building's front has three main sections, called bays. The main entrance is on the left side.

The bottom two floors and the top two floors have special designs. Their windows and doors look similar on each level. The middle three floors have tall openings with rounded tops. They also have fancy decorations called cornices.

Who Designed This Building?

A famous architect named Ernest Flagg designed this building. He was from New York City. The building was finished in 1899. It was built where an old hotel, the United States Hotel, used to stand. The bank was actually in part of that hotel before it was torn down.

Ernest Flagg studied architecture at a famous school in Paris, France, called the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He designed the First National Bank Building to look like a giant classical column. The bottom two levels are like the base of the column. The top two levels are like its fancy top, called the capital. The floors in between are like the main shaft of the column.
