The First National Bank Building is a historic building in downtown Portland, Oregon. It is a very important building because it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized for its special history and architecture.

The building is located at 401–409 SW 5th Avenue. It was designed by a famous architecture firm called Coolidge and Shattuck from Boston. They designed it to look like some classic Greek and Roman buildings, similar to the Lincoln Memorial.

The First National Bank Building was finished in 1916. At that time, the bank needed a bigger space. People often called the building the "marble temple" because of its grand design. Its strong and beautiful look helped people trust the bank and feel secure about their money.

The Bank's Home

This three-story building became the main office for the First National Bank (FNB) in Portland in 1916. It stayed part of the bank's main headquarters for many years.

Growing Bigger

Over time, the bank grew even larger. In 1923, FNB added a new four-story marble building next door. This new building was first used by an affiliated company, but FNB owned it.

Later, between 1957 and 1959, the bank expanded much more. They built a much larger building, now known as 400 SW Sixth Avenue. This new building replaced some older structures, including the bank's 1923 building.

A New Chapter for the Building

The original 1916 building continued to be part of the bank's headquarters until 1972. That year, First National Bank moved its main offices to the new 40-story tower nearby.

After the bank moved, it sold its two buildings along Stark Street. The historic 1916 building was bought by the Oregon Pioneer Savings & Loan Association. This sale helped save the building from being torn down. The city of Portland then officially recognized it as a historic landmark. It became the new main office for Oregon Pioneer.
