How FNMA Started
The group officially began in 2001. Back then, it was known as the Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA). It was set up to support media and communication for Indigenous communities in remote areas.
Later, between 2016 and 2017, the group grew bigger. It changed its name to First Nations Media Australia (FNMA). This change meant it now helps all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander broadcasting and media across the whole country.
What FNMA Does
FNMA has its main office in Mparntwe-Alice Springs.
One of the big things FNMA does is hold an event called the National Remote Indigenous Media Festival every year. This festival brings together people from Indigenous media to share ideas and celebrate their work. In September 2019, it was the 21st time this festival was held.
Working with Other Groups
FNMA works with many other organizations to help Indigenous media.
Helping Music Artists
First Sounds is a project FNMA runs with the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA). Their goal is to help more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians get their songs played on Australian radio stations.
Partnering with ABC
Since June 2021, FNMA has been working closely with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). They share knowledge and staff. This partnership helps bring more Indigenous voices and stories to everyone in Australia through ABC's programs.
Working with AIATSIS
FNMA also has a long history of working with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). They have helped to turn AIATSIS's huge collection of old recordings and resources into digital files. This makes it easier to keep and share these important cultural items. FNMA also helped set up a new AIATSIS center in Mparntwe-Alice Springs, which opened in February 2024.
