The five-lined earless dragon (scientific name: Tympanocryptis pentalineata) is a small lizard. It's one of 15 known species in its group. These lizards are often called "dragons" because of their cool looks!
What Does It Look Like?
This little dragon is quite small. It usually grows to be about 5 to 6 centimeters long. That's about 2 to 2.5 inches! We measure its length from its nose (snout) to the base of its tail (vent).
How Did It Get Its Name?
The five-lined earless dragon has a special name. "Pentalineata" means "five-lined" in Latin. This is because it has five white stripes on its back. One stripe runs down its spine. Two stripes are on each side of its back. And two more stripes run along its sides. These stripes make it easy to spot!
Where Does It Live?
This unique dragon lives in special places. It likes flat areas called flood-plains. These areas are covered with grasses and small bushes. Scientists found it living in farm fields. It also lives in leftover grasslands in southeastern Queensland, Australia. Sadly, these grasslands are one of the most endangered places in Queensland. This means the five-lined earless dragon needs our help to protect its home!
