Plot Summary
A Crowded Cottage and a New Plan
The story begins with the Famous Five – Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and her dog Timmy – arriving at Kirrin Cottage. George's father, Uncle Quentin, is a scientist. He tells his wife, Aunt Fanny, that his friend, Professor Hayling, will arrive early. Professor Hayling brings his son, Tinker, and Tinker's pet monkey, Mischief. Tinker loves to make car and engine noises.
With so many people and a noisy monkey, the cottage becomes very crowded. The two scientists find it hard to work. Tinker suggests a great idea: the children could stay at his old lighthouse. This lighthouse is on a place called Demon's Rocks, about 10 miles away. The children are thrilled to have their own adventure.
Mysteries at Demon's Rocks
The children settle into the lighthouse. Soon, they meet an old sailor named Jeremiah Boogle. He tells them amazing stories from his youth. He talks about three bad guys who used to trick ships into crashing near Demon's Rocks. These villains would then steal everything from the wrecked ships. Jeremiah says their leader, One-Ear Bill, hid a treasure that was never found.
Today, two of One-Ear Bill's family members, Jacob and Ebenezer, show tourists around the old wreckers' cave. One night, Jacob sneaks into the lighthouse. He steals some items and the key to the lighthouse.
The Search for Treasure
The children decide to visit the cave. While exploring, Mischief the monkey finds a gold coin! This makes the children believe Jeremiah's story about the hidden treasure. They want to go back and search for more.
However, Jacob and Ebenezer don't want the children to find the treasure. They lock the Famous Five inside the lighthouse. This is to stop them from returning to the cave. But Julian and Dick are clever. They find a secret tunnel that leads into the cave network. Inside, they discover the hidden treasure!
A Stormy Rescue
The tide starts to rise, making it impossible for Julian and Dick to get back to the mainland. They hurry back to the lighthouse. A terrible storm begins, with strong winds and rain. To alert the villagers, they light the lighthouse lamp. They also ring an old warning bell.
Jacob and Ebenezer, seeing the storm and the children's signals, quickly run away. The next morning, the children are rescued by the villagers. Julian and Dick decide to give the treasure to the police. After their exciting adventure, the Famous Five return to Kirrin Cottage.
Other Adventures
The gamebook The Wailing Lighthouse Game (1985) was based on this exciting novel. It allowed readers to make choices and create their own adventure.
