The Mystery Begins
The story starts with the Famous Five riding their bikes to the coast. They are near a place called Whispering Island. Here, they meet a boy named Wilfrid. He is a bit wild, but they soon become friends.
Even though the Five wanted a quiet holiday, they get stuck on Whispering Island. People say strange things happen there. Lucas, a man who works at the nearby golf course, used to guard the island. He tells them about its secrets.
Discovering a Secret Plot
Wilfrid accidentally finds out that someone is stealing old treasures from the island. He knows he needs to find out who it is. The Famous Five decide to help him.
They climb into the grounds of an old castle on the island. Their goal is to find the stolen treasure. But the thieves catch them! The Five and Wilfrid get locked up in a cellar with the stolen items.
An Exciting Escape
Before the thieves return, the Five and Wilfrid use things they find in the cellar. They manage to escape through a "ventilation hole." This is a clever way Enid Blyton often has her characters escape!
The thieves are very surprised. The Five manage to get out of the cellar. They even throw a table at some of the bad guys! Tired but free, they run towards the coast.
They decide to risk sleeping on the island. They give up trying to find Wilfrid's boat for the night. The men who were stealing the treasure try to escape using Wilfrid's boat. But Anne and Timmy the dog manage to scare them away. The thieves end up escaping in their own boat.
After this exciting event, the Five and Wilfrid feel very happy. Anne convinces everyone to row back to the coast. They head to Wilfrid's cottage.
Solving the Mystery
The book quickly moves to the part where the Famous Five and Wilfrid talk to the police. The mystery is solved! Blyton ends the book with everyone enjoying themselves near the cottage.
Real-Life Inspirations
Some parts of the book are thought to be based on real places and people.
- Whispering Island might be based on Brownsea Island. This island is located in Poole Harbour in England.
- Lucas the golf course worker might be based on the groundsman of the Isle of Purbeck golf course. Enid Blyton's husband used to own this golf course.
