Montreal's Famous Five Roses Sign

The iconic Five Roses Flour sign in Montreal

The Farine Five Roses sign is a very famous landmark in Montreal. It was first put up in 1948 above the Ogilvie flour mill.

When the Five Roses brand was sold in 2006, the sign's future was uncertain. ADM still owned the mill but no longer owned the flour brand. However, Smucker, the new owner of Five Roses, spent a lot of money, almost a million dollars, to keep the sign working and lit up. This shows how important the sign is to the brand and the city. In 2020, the city of Montreal officially protected the sign as an important architectural feature.

The Five Roses Cookbook: A Canadian Classic

Five Roses Cookbook
The Five Roses Cook Book

The Five Roses Cook Book is a very popular recipe collection. It was first published way back in 1913 by the Lake of the Woods Milling Company. This cookbook is special because it's the longest-running recipe collection from any Canadian flour company.

The cookbook, of course, features recipes that use Five Roses flour. In 2003, a special printed copy of the 1967 edition was made. It included a historical introduction written by Elizabeth Driver, who is an expert on cookbooks. The very first edition of the cookbook had recipes that women sent in for a contest run by the Lake of the Woods Milling Company. It cost about 40 cents back then!
