The Fleming Building is an important old building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This means it is a special place worth protecting because of its history.

Building Design and History

The Fleming Building is a very tall office building. It has eleven stories and stands about 174 feet (53 meters) high. A famous architecture company from Chicago, called D.H. Burnham and Company, designed it. They finished building it in 1909.

Early Commercial Style

The building was designed in a style called "Early Commercial." This style was popular for office buildings around that time. It was one of the very first buildings in Iowa to use a strong steel frame. This made it possible to build much taller structures.

Beaux-Arts Details

You can also see parts of the "Beaux-Arts" style in its design. This style often uses grand, balanced shapes and fancy details. It was common for buildings designed by the Burnham Company to mix these styles.
