Flinders Island was an Aboriginal language from Australia. It was spoken on Flinders Island, which is off the coast of Queensland. Sadly, this language is now extinct, meaning there are no longer any people who speak it.
The people who lived on Flinders Island and spoke this language were called the Aba Yalgayi. It is not completely certain if Flinders Island was a unique language or a dialect (a different way of speaking) of another language. One of the last people known to speak Flinders Island was a man named Johnny Flinders.
What's in a Name?
Sometimes, you might hear the name Biyalgeyi used, but there isn't clear proof that this name refers to the Flinders Island language itself. It might have been used for something else.
Another name, Yalgawarra, is known to be the name of a specific clan or family group. It's important to remember that clan names are different from language names.
