Flower Witch Mary Bell (花の魔法使いマリーベル, Hana no Mahōtsukai Marī Beru) is a fun magical girl anime series from Japan. It was made by Ashi Productions and has 50 episodes. The show first aired in Japan from 1992 to 1993.

This anime became popular in many other countries too. It was shown in places like Hong Kong, South Korea, Italy, and even in many Arab countries. Besides the TV show, there was also a movie and two short educational films. You can also watch the series on DVD, which came out in 2004.

About the Show

Flower Witch Mary Bell is different from many other magical girl shows. While most magical girls are in elementary or middle school, Mary Bell looks like a very young child. But don't let that fool you! She is actually about 500,000 years old.

Mary Bell is a "native" magical girl, meaning she was born with her powers. She is not a princess, but she uses her magic to help others. The show is a bit like a musical, with characters often singing instead of just talking. Each main character even has their own special song!

The Story of Mary Bell

The story begins in a port town called Sunny Bell. Two siblings, Yuuri and Ken, live there with their parents. Their parents have just opened a flower shop, but it's not doing very well.

Yuuri and Ken borrow a book from their neighbor, Rose. It's called the Mary Bell Picture Book. The book tells a story about two children who get lost in a forest and are saved by a magical girl named Mary Bell. Yuuri and Ken wish that the real Mary Bell could help their parents' flower shop.

Suddenly, Mary Bell appears right in front of them! She introduces herself and her magical friend, Tambourine. Mary Bell agrees to use her magic to help the family and their flower shop.

Throughout the series, Mary Bell, Ken, Yuuri, their dog Ribbon, and other friends go on many exciting adventures. These adventures happen both in Sunny Bell and in the Flower Magic World, which is Mary Bell's magical home.

In the final episodes, a special tree from the Flower Magic World, called the Holy Tree, comes to Sunny Bell. It wants to take all the plants from Earth because it thinks humans are harming them. Mary Bell and the people of Sunny Bell work together to convince the Holy Tree not to do this. Even though Mary Bell has completed her goal of collecting human dreams, she decides to stay on Earth. She wants to keep using her magic to encourage people and help them.

Meet the Characters

Mary Bell is the main character who helps people with her magic. She first meets Yuuri, her younger brother Ken, and their puppy, Ribbon. Other children named Vivian, Bongo, and Tap also often join their adventures.

A "floral magician" from the Flower Magic World (花魔法界, hanamahō-kai). She looks like a young girl but is actually 500,000 years old! Mary Bell uses both regular magic and special flower magic. She is friends with fairies but is not a fairy herself. Her famous saying is: "Just leave it to Mary Bell!" (マリーベルにおまかせよ!, Marī Beru ni omakase yo!)
Tambourine (タンバリン, Tanbarin) Voiced by: Chika Sakamoto
