Follow the Leader 2004
This sculpture, called "Follow the Leader," was seen at the Ludington (MI) harbor in 2004.

Follow the leader is a fun and classic children's game. It's a simple game where one person leads, and everyone else copies their actions. It's a great way to be creative and get some exercise!

How to Play Follow the Leader

Playing "Follow the Leader" is easy and doesn't need any special equipment. Here's how you can play:

Choosing the Leader

First, one player is chosen to be the "leader." This person will be at the front of the line. You can choose the leader by drawing straws, playing rock-paper-scissors, or just deciding together.

Starting the Game

Once the leader is chosen, all the other players line up single file behind them. Everyone should be ready to watch the leader closely.

Following the Leader's Actions

The leader then starts to move around. They can do all sorts of actions, like walking, skipping, hopping, or even crawling! They might also make funny movements, like waving their arms, spinning around, or pretending to be an animal.

All the other players must carefully copy every action the leader does. If the leader jumps, everyone else jumps. If the leader touches their toes, everyone else touches their toes.

What Happens if You Don't Follow?

If a player doesn't follow the leader's actions exactly, or if they miss a move, they are usually out of the game. This makes players pay close attention and try their best to keep up.

How the Game Ends

The game continues until only one player is left besides the leader. That remaining player then becomes the new leader, and a new round of the game begins! All the players who were out can join back in for the new round.

Fun Variations of Follow the Leader

There are many ways to make "Follow the Leader" even more exciting. You can play it indoors or outdoors, and you can add new rules to keep it fresh.

Musical Follow the Leader

You can play with music! When the music plays, the leader moves and everyone follows. When the music stops, everyone freezes in place until the music starts again.

The Wiggles' Song

In 2007, the popular children's music group The Wiggles wrote a song called "Follow the Leader." It was part of their album Getting Strong (Wiggle and Learn) and was also featured on their DVD You Make Me Feel Like Dancing. The song helps kids learn about the game in a fun, musical way.
