For its first two years, For the Children was just ten minutes long. The show stopped in 1939 when all BBC Television broadcasts were paused during World War II. It returned on June 9, 1946, and was then shown on Sunday afternoons. The show also became longer, running for twenty minutes.

Famous Guests and Puppets

On March 13, 1937, a special act called George Queen's Pantomime Goose was shown. This was part of the opening programs for the afternoon.

In October 1946, a very popular children's puppet named Muffin the Mule made his first TV appearance on the show. Muffin was joined by his friend, Annette Mills. The clever puppet character was created by the puppeteer Ann Hogarth.

When Did For the Children End?

For the Children had its last broadcast in December 1952. After that, other new BBC children's television shows took its place. One of these new programs was Watch with Mother.
