Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Forgotten New York is a super cool website created by Kevin Walsh in 1999. It's all about finding the hidden and often overlooked parts of New York City. Think of it like a treasure hunt for forgotten history!

What is Forgotten New York?

This website explores many interesting things that most people walk right past. It shows old painted ads on buildings and lampposts that have been around for decades. You can also discover 18th-century houses tucked away in busy areas.

The site also dives into abandoned subway stations and old trolley tracks. It even explores neighborhoods that are off the beaten path. Plus, it finds amazing bits of nature hiding in the middle of the big city. It's like seeing New York with new eyes!

From Website to Book

The idea for the website was so popular that it became a book! In 2003, a publisher called HarperCollins thought it would make a great book. The book, also named Forgotten New York, came out in September 2006.

Kevin Walsh also wrote another book called Forgotten Queens. He worked on this book with the Greater Astoria Historical Society. It was released in December 2013. He's even planning a second Forgotten New York book!

Awards and Recognition

Forgotten New York has received special recognition. On March 2, 2015, the Guides Association of New York City gave it an award. It was named their first "Outstanding New York Website." This shows how much people appreciate its unique look at the city.
