The Former Greenwood Town Hall is a special building in Locke Mills, Maine. It's located at 270 Main Street. This building was finished in 1931. For many years, it was a busy place for the town. People held town meetings, elections, and even school graduations here. It was also a spot for fun events like dances and private parties.

In 1988, the town built a new town hall. Now, a local non-profit group takes care of this old building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This means it's an important historical site.

What is the Former Greenwood Town Hall?

The Former Greenwood Town Hall is a large, two-story building. It's made of wood and has a front gable roof. The front of the building faces north. It has a main entrance in the middle. This entrance has a small porch with a hip roof. The porch is held up by round columns.

How the Building Looks

On each side of the main door, there are windows. There are three more windows on the second floor. A smaller window is in the pointed part of the roof. On the west side, there's another entrance. Most windows on the first floor are sash windows. All windows on the second floor are also sash windows. At the back, there's a small addition. This part used to have restrooms.

Inside, the main entrance leads to a wide hallway. This hallway has a big staircase going upstairs. Behind this hallway, there was once space for town offices. The upstairs area has a large auditorium. An auditorium is a big room for performances or meetings. It has a stage at one end. The hallway and auditorium have wood panels on the lower part of the walls. This is called wainscoting. The rest of the walls are covered in fiberboard.

A Place for the Community

Even though some town records say the hall was built in 1932 or 1933, town papers show something different. Funds for building it were set aside in 1929 and 1930. The first town meeting in the hall happened in 1931. It seems many people in the community helped build it. They gave materials and their time. The town paid about $8,000 for the building.

Fun and Important Events

The hall quickly became a central spot for the town. It hosted many important and fun events. School graduation ceremonies took place here. Town meetings were held to discuss important town matters. People enjoyed musical shows and plays. Dances were also very popular. These dances still happen sometimes today. During World War II, members of the National Guard used the auditorium for training.

In 1988, the town offices moved to a new building. The Former Greenwood Town Hall is now looked after by a local non-profit group. This group makes sure the building stays in good shape. It was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This listing helps protect the building for future generations.
