Fortuna Bay facts for kids
Fortuna Bay is a cool bay, about 3 miles (5 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. You can find it on the north coast of South Georgia. Its entrance is marked by Cape Best on the west side and Robertson Point on the east.
This bay got its name from a ship called Fortuna. This ship was part of a Norwegian-Argentine whaling trip led by C.A. Larsen. They helped set up the very first permanent whaling station at Grytviken, South Georgia, back in 1904–05.
Explorers have visited Fortuna Bay many times. The Second German Antarctic Expedition explored it in 1911–12. Later, in 1929–30, people from the Discovery Investigations project mapped the area.
There's another place called Ocean Harbour, which is about 22 miles (35 km) to the southeast. It used to be called "New Fortuna Bay." But its name was changed to avoid confusion with Fortuna Bay.
