Fothad II facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fothad II was an important bishop in Scotland a long time ago, from 1059 to 1093. He was the Bishop of St Andrews, a very significant church position back then. He served during most of the time that King Máel Coluim III ruled Scotland (from 1058 to 1093).

People spelled his name in different ways, like Fodhoch, Fothach, and Foderoch. We know his father's name was Máel Míchéil.

Fothad's Role in Royal Life

Fothad II played a part in a very important royal event. According to a writer named Andrew of Wyntoun, Fothad was the one who performed the marriage ceremony for King Máel Coluim and his second wife, Margaret. Margaret later became a saint!

There was a story from the early 1100s that said Fothad agreed to follow the rules of the Archbishop of York (a powerful church leader in England). This was supposedly done because Queen Margaret asked him to. However, most modern historians don't think this story is true.

An Important Church Leader

Fothad was a very influential person. When he died in 1093, his death was even mentioned in the Annals of Ulster. The Annals were like old history books that recorded important events. They called him "Fothud ardepscop Alban," which means "Fothad, High Bishop [or Archbishop] of Scotland." This shows how important he was in the Scottish church.

After Fothad II

After Fothad II passed away, there's a bit of a mystery about who became bishop next. One old list says a person named Giric took over. But other records mention a different bishop, Turgot, who was consecrated later. Historians are still trying to figure out exactly what happened during that time.
