Four Mile is a small and important Aboriginal community located in the beautiful Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is situated close to the town of Kununurra. This community is part of the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, an area known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural history.
Understanding Native Title
The people of Four Mile live on land that is deeply connected to the Miriuwung Gajerrong people. These traditional owners have a special connection to this land, which is recognized through something called Native Title. Native Title means that the law acknowledges the traditional rights and interests that Aboriginal people have had over their lands and waters for a very long time.
The Miriuwung Gajerrong people are also part of an important agreement called the Ord Final Agreement. This agreement helps create strong partnerships between the Miriuwung Gajerrong people, the government of Western Australia, and other groups. The goal is to work together for the benefit of everyone in the East Kimberley region and to plan for a bright future.
Community Leadership and Management
To help manage their traditional lands and look after the community's interests, the Miriuwung Gajerrong people have a special organization. It's called the Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation, often shortened to MG Corp. This corporation acts on behalf of all Miriuwung Gajerrong native title holders. It makes sure that agreements, like the Ord Final Agreement, are followed, especially concerning the areas where people live.
MG Corp was officially set up in 2006. Its main role is to help the Miriuwung Gajerrong people with planning, managing, and using their traditional lands. This ensures that their cultural heritage and connection to the land are respected and maintained.
The Four Mile community also has its own local organization, the Four Mile Aboriginal Corporation. This group was formed in 1993 and helps manage the day-to-day life and needs of the community members.
Planning for the Future
To make sure the Four Mile community grows in a good and organized way, a special plan was created. It's called Four Mile Layout Plan No.1. Think of it like a detailed map and guide for how the community's buildings and services will be arranged.
This plan was developed following specific state guidelines for Aboriginal settlements. The community itself approved the plan on January 17, 2011. Later, the Western Australian Planning Commission, which is a government body responsible for planning across the state, also gave its approval on September 29, 2011. This plan helps ensure that Four Mile develops in a way that benefits everyone living there.
