Discovering the Japanese Wild Strawberry
All strawberry plants have tiny parts inside their cells called chromosomes. These chromosomes carry all the instructions for how the plant grows.
What Makes This Strawberry Unique?
Every strawberry plant has a basic set of 7 chromosomes. Fragaria nipponica is a "diploid" plant. This means it has two full sets of these chromosomes. So, it has a total of 14 chromosomes in each cell.
Growing and Eating Fragaria nipponica
People in Japan grow Fragaria nipponica for its fruit. The special kind from Yakushima Island, Fragaria nipponica var. yakusimensis, is especially popular. Its fruit is edible and delicious.
