Club Career Highlights
Early Years and Lyon Success
François Clerc was born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France. He joined the famous Olympique Lyonnais football club when he was 14 years old. After playing with their reserve team, he was loaned to Toulouse FC. He made his first appearance in Ligue 1, France's top football league, on August 14, 2004. His team won that game 4–1 against RC Strasbourg.
Clerc returned to Lyon for the 2005–06 season. He quickly became an important player for the team. During his time there, Lyon won three national championships in a row. He played in 62 league games during these successful years. He also played in 20 UEFA Champions League matches.
Moving to Nice and Saint-Étienne
In 2010, Clerc joined OGC Nice. He had faced some knee injury problems, but he proved he was ready to play again. In his second year with Nice, he scored four goals. This was his best goal-scoring season in his career.
On July 9, 2012, Clerc signed a three-year contract with AS Saint-Étienne. He scored his first goal for the club on March 17, 2013. This goal helped his team get a 2–2 draw against Paris Saint-Germain FC.
Later Career and Retirement
After playing two seasons with Gazélec Ajaccio in Ligue 2, Clerc decided to retire from professional football. He was 35 years old when he announced his retirement.
International Career with France
François Clerc also played for the France national football team. He earned his first cap, which means his first appearance for the national team, on October 11, 2006. This was in a game against the Faroe Islands, which France won 5–0. This match was part of the qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2008.
He was chosen by coach Raymond Domenech to play in the Euro 2008 tournament. He played in the final group stage match against Italy. However, France lost that game 2–0 and was eliminated from the tournament.
