Club Career
Playing for Clubs
François Clerc started his football journey at a young age. He joined Olympique Lyonnais when he was 14 years old. After playing for their reserve team, he was loaned to Toulouse FC. This is where he first played in Ligue 1, which is the top football league in France. His first game was on 14 August 2004.
Time at Lyon
Clerc returned to Lyon for the 2005–06 season. He became an important player for the team. Lyon won three national championships in a row during his time there. He played in 62 league games during these winning years. He also played in 20 UEFA Champions League games, which is a big European club competition.
Moving to Nice
In 2010, Clerc joined OGC Nice, another team in the top division. He had faced some knee injury problems before this. But he convinced the manager, Eric Roy, that his injuries were behind him. In his second year with Nice, he scored four goals. This was his best scoring season ever.
Playing for Saint-Étienne
On 9 July 2012, Clerc signed a three-year contract with AS Saint-Étienne. He scored his first and only goal for them in the 2012–13 season. This goal helped his team get a 2–2 draw against Paris Saint-Germain FC.
Retirement
After playing two seasons with Gazélec Ajaccio in Ligue 2 (the second division), Clerc decided to retire from football. He was 35 years old when he announced his retirement.
International Career
Playing for France
François Clerc also played for the French national team. He earned his first "cap" (meaning he played his first game for the national team) on 11 October 2006. This was in a game against the Faroe Islands, which France won 5–0.
He was chosen to play in the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. This is a big competition for European national teams. Clerc played in the final group stage game against Italy. However, France lost that game 2–0 and was knocked out of the tournament.
