About Frances Koncan
Early Life and Learning
Frances Koncan was born in May 1986. Her birthplace was Couchiching First Nation.
She studied psychology at the University of Manitoba. Later, she earned a master's degree in playwriting. This means she learned how to write plays for the theatre. She got this degree from Brooklyn College in New York City.
Her Career and Work
Frances Koncan is currently a professor. She teaches at the School of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia.
She has written many plays. Some of her well-known plays include Women of the Fur Trade, zahgidiwin/love, Flesh-Coloured Crayons, and Space Girl.
Frances has also worked as an assistant director for several theatre productions. This means she helped the main director bring plays to life on stage. Some of these plays were Seminar, The Humans, and A Doll's House, Part 2. She also worked on Stripped Down Anthony & Cleopatra.
From 2019 to 2022, Frances was an arts reporter. She wrote about art and culture for the Winnipeg Free Press newspaper. After that, she became the Writer-in-Residence at the Winnipeg Public Library. She held this position from 2022 to 2023.

Frances Koncan's work in theatre has earned her several awards. She received the REVEAL Indigenous Arts Award. She also won the Winnipeg Arts Council's 2017 RBC On the Rise Award. Her work was also considered for the Tarragon Emerging Playwrights Award.
