Frances Ann McBroom Thompson (born October 25, 1942 – died April 23, 2014) was an amazing American math teacher. She wrote many math textbooks and became a professor at Texas Woman's University. She helped many students and teachers learn about math.

About Her Life

Frances was born in Brownwood, Texas, on October 25, 1942. Her parents were Alexander and Myrtle McBroom. She went to Brownwood High School. After only three years, she graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1963. She earned a special honor called cum laude, which means "with honor."

She continued her studies in mathematics. In 1967, she earned a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. Then, in 1973, she completed her doctorate degree in math education at the University of Georgia.

Frances taught math to students in junior high and high school. Around 1983, she joined Texas Woman's University as a professor. She retired in 2009 as a full professor. She worked hard to make teacher education better across Texas. She also helped the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as an evaluator. Besides teaching math, she often taught Bible classes at her church.

Frances passed away on April 23, 2014, after battling cancer.

Awards and Recognition

Frances Thompson received many awards for her excellent work. In 1998, Abilene Christian University named her a distinguished alumna. This means she was a very successful former student. They also gave her the Grover C. Morland Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Texas Woman's University also honored her. They gave her their Distinguished Service Award. She also received the Mary Mason Lyon Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service. These awards show how much she contributed to teaching and helping others.
