The Chess of Love Poem
Francesc de Castellví is famous for being one of the writers of a special poem called Scachs d'amor, which means Chess of Love. This poem is based on a chess game and was written in Valencian, a language spoken in Valencia.
In the poem, Francesc de Castellví played the role of Mars (the Roman god of war) and used the White chess pieces (which were described as red in the poem). He played against Narcís Vinyoles, who played as Venus (the Roman goddess of love) and used the Black chess pieces (described as green). Francesc de Castellví managed to checkmate Narcís Vinyoles in the game.
Another person, Bernat Fenollar, played the role of Mercury (the Roman messenger god). He commented on the game and explained the rules as they played. This poem is very important because it shows the first known chess game played with the modern rules of chess. This includes how the queen and bishop pieces move today, which was a big change from older chess rules.
