Bernat Fenollar, also known as Mossèn Fenollar, was a very talented person from Valencia, Spain. He was born in Penàguila in 1438 and passed away in Valencia on February 28, 1516.
Bernat Fenollar had many important roles during his life. He was a priest, which is why he was often called "Mossèn." He also worked at the Valencia Cathedral and taught mathematics at the University of Valencia. Besides his religious and teaching duties, he was a well-known poet and a skilled chess player.

The Chess of Love: Scachs d'amor
Bernat Fenollar was one of the writers of a unique poem called Scachs d'amor, which means Chess of Love. This poem describes a game of chess played between two friends, Francesc de Castellví and Narcís Vinyoles.
What makes Scachs d'amor so special is that Bernat Fenollar not only commented on the game but also explained the rules. It's believed to be the very first time a chess game was written down using the modern rules we know today. This includes how the queen and bishop pieces move.
