Francesco Corselli's Life Story
Francesco Corselli was born in Piacenza, Italy, in 1705. His family was from France.
He became a music director quite early. He led the music for important funerals in Parma. These included the funerals of Francesco Farnese in 1724 and Antonio Farnese in 1731. He also worked as a Kapellmeister (a main music director) at a church. This was the Church of Santa Maria della Steccata from 1727 to 1731. At the same time, he worked for the court of Parma until 1733.
During this time, he created his first major works. These included operas like La Venere placata (1731) and Nino (1732). He also wrote religious music. One important piece was the oratorio Santa Clotilde (1733). An oratorio is like an opera but without costumes or acting.
In 1734, Corselli moved to Madrid, Spain. There, he was a talented musician. He worked as a singer (tenor), a harpsichord player, and a violinist. He also taught music to the young royal children.
Around 1737, he joined the "Colegio de cantorcillos." This was a school for young singers. He stayed there until he died. In 1747, he became a director at the Buen Retiro Palace Theatre. He worked with two other Italian composers, Francesco Corradini and Giovanni Battista Mele.
In Madrid, Corselli wrote many operas. He also composed a lot of religious music. This was especially true after 1738. That year, he became the Kapellmeister for the Royal Chapel. This was a very important musical position.
Francesco Corselli died in Madrid on April 3, 1778.
