Who Was Francesco Talenti?
Francesco Talenti was a master builder and artist. He was first mentioned working at the Orvieto Cathedral in 1325. This shows he was already a skilled craftsman early in his career. His work helped shape the look of Florence during the 14th century.
Building the Campanile
In the 1350s, Talenti took over a big project. He helped finish Giotto's Campanile, which is a tall bell tower next to the Florence Cathedral. The famous artist Giotto started this tower. Talenti completed the two middle sections and the very top part of the tower. His work made the Campanile one of Florence's most beautiful landmarks.
Working on Florence Cathedral
Becoming a Master Builder
In 1351, Francesco Talenti became the main director of works for the Florence Cathedral. This huge church is also known as the Florentine Duomo. He took over this important role from another famous artist, Andrea Pisano. Being the director meant he was in charge of all the building work.
Adding to the Cathedral's Design
Talenti made the Florence Cathedral much bigger. He redesigned the rounded parts of the church, called the apses. He also made the main part of the church, called the nave, longer. Because of his changes, the Florence Cathedral became the largest church built in Europe at that time.
The Famous Dome
The idea for the cathedral's famous dome was first mentioned in 1357. People still discuss whether Talenti was the one who first suggested adding this huge dome. Even if he didn't design the dome itself, his changes to the cathedral's structure made it possible for such a large dome to be built later on.
