The Francis D. Williams House is a historic brick house located at 3 Plain Street in Taunton, Massachusetts. Built around 1830, this house is a special example of the Federal architectural style in Taunton's Weir Village neighborhood. It shows us what homes looked like a long time ago.

The Francis D. Williams House: A Historic Home

The Francis D. Williams House stands in a very noticeable spot. It is right near the Taunton River bridge, on a piece of land shaped like a triangle. This land is bordered by Plain, Water, and Berkley Streets.

What Does the House Look Like?

This house is a large, two-and-a-half-story building made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side-gable roof. You can see two dormer windows sticking out from the roof and a brick chimney in the middle.

The front of the house, which faces the bridge, has eight windows. These windows are evenly spaced and have stone sills and tops. The main doors are on the sides of the house, facing Berkley and Plain Streets. Each side has five window sections, with the entrance in the middle. A two-story brick section extends from the back of the main house.

A Glimpse into History

The Francis D. Williams House was built around 1830. At that time, the Weir Village area was a busy place. It was a seaport, meaning ships came and went, and it was also an industrial area with many factories.

This house is one of the few brick houses in Taunton built in the Greek Revival style. It was likely built by Francis Williams, who came from an important local family. His family was involved in sea trade, which meant they bought and sold goods using ships. The house is quite large, which makes people think the Williams family might have used it to house sailors who worked on the ships that traveled along the coast.

Why is This House Important?

The Francis D. Williams House is important because it is a rare example of old architecture in Taunton. It helps us understand what life was like in the early 1800s. Because of its historical value, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 5, 1984. This list helps protect important historical places across the United States.
