Francis "Fannie" M. Kneeland (born in 1873) was an amazing American doctor. She was one of the first African American women doctors to work in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Kneeland had her own medical office on a famous street called Beale Street.

Becoming a Doctor and Helping Others

Fannie Kneeland was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1873. When she was young, she lost her parents. Even so, she stayed with her family and helped take care of her younger brothers and sisters.

In 1898, Fannie graduated with honors from Meharry Medical College. This was a special medical school for African Americans. After finishing her studies, Dr. Kneeland opened her own medical practice in Memphis. By 1907, her office was located on Beale Street.

At that time, she was one of the very few Black women doctors practicing in the city. Dr. Kneeland also worked with the University of West Tennessee. In 1923, she was the main teacher in their nursing program.

Dr. Kneeland also helped young people who needed support and guidance. She worked with the Juvenile Court Judge, Camille Kelley. Judge Kelley would send girls who were struggling or living in poverty to Dr. Kneeland for help.

Fannie Kneeland was also very involved in her Baptist church. She held many leadership roles there. Later in her life, she moved to Chicago to live with some of her relatives.
