Francis Napier, 6th Lord Napier (born Scott) (around 1702 – 1773) was an important Scottish noble. He held two special titles: Lord Napier and Baronet of Scott.
Early Life of Francis Napier
Francis Scott was born around 1702. His father was Sir William Scott, 2nd Baronet of Thirlestane. His mother was Elizabeth Napier, who was the Mistress of Napier.
Francis Napier's Career and Titles
When his grandmother, Margaret Brisbane, 5th Lady Napier, passed away in 1706, Francis became the 6th Lord Napier. To mark this, he legally changed his last name to Napier.
Later, in 1725, his father died. Francis then also inherited the title of Baronet of Scott, from Thirlestane. Since then, these two important titles have always been held by the same person.
Lord Napier also served as a Commissioner of Police for Scotland. He held this role from 1761 until 1773.
Francis Napier's Family Life
Lord Napier married two times during his life.
His first marriage was in 1729 to Lady Henrietta Hope. She was the daughter of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun. Francis and Henrietta had five sons together:
- William Napier (died 1775), who became the 7th Lord Napier after his father.
- Captain Charles Napier (1731–1807).
- Lieutenant Colonel Francis Napier (died 1779).
- John Napier (died 1759).
- Major General Mark Napier (1738–1809).
In 1750, Francis Napier married his second wife, Henrietta Maria Johnston. She was the daughter of George Johnston of Dublin. Francis and Henrietta Maria had several children:
- George Napier (1751–1804), whose sons became famous military officers.
- Hester Napier (died 1819).
- James Napier (died 1760), who passed away when he was young.
- Captain Patrick Napier (died 1801), a captain in the Royal Navy.
- Lieutenant James John Napier (died 1776), who was killed while serving on a ship called HMS Fox.
- Lieutenant Stewart Napier (died 1778).
- Mary Napier (died 1765).
When Francis Napier passed away in 1773, his eldest son, William, inherited his titles.
