Francis Raymond Shea was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church in America. He served as the third bishop for the Diocese of Evansville in Indiana. He held this important role from 1969 to 1989. A bishop is a high-ranking priest who oversees a specific area, called a diocese.
Early Life and Priesthood
Francis Shea was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on December 4, 1913. He decided to become a priest and studied hard for many years.
On March 19, 1939, he became a priest for the Diocese of Nashville. This special ceremony took place in Rome. Bishop Ralph Hayes led the ordination.
For the next 30 years, Father Shea worked in different churches and roles across Tennessee. He helped lead many communities. In 1967, he was given the special title of monsignor. This title is given to priests who have done great service for the Church.
Becoming a Bishop
On December 1, 1969, a very important event happened. Pope Paul VI, who was the leader of the worldwide Catholic Church at the time, chose Francis Shea to be the new bishop of the Diocese of Evansville.
Bishop Shea was officially made a bishop on February 3, 1970. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It was led by Cardinal Luigi Raimondi. A cardinal is another high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church, chosen by the Pope.
Later Years
Bishop Shea served the people of Evansville for many years. He helped guide the diocese and its churches.
On March 11, 1989, he decided to step down from his role as bishop. Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation. This means he retired from his position.
Francis Shea passed away on August 18, 1994. He is remembered for his many years of service to the Catholic Church.
