Francis David Rome (born 1905, died 1985) was an important leader in the British Army. He held a high position called Major General. From 1956 to 1959, he was in charge of the British area in Berlin, Germany.

Military Career

Francis Rome joined the British Army in 1925. In 1927, he joined a special group called the Royal Fusiliers.

Second World War

He fought in the Second World War. Towards the end of the war, he led a group called the 111th Indian Infantry Brigade.

After the War

After the war, he led different parachute brigades (groups of soldiers who jump from planes). He was in charge of the 3rd Parachute Brigade in Palestine starting in 1946. Then, in 1947, he led the 1st Parachute Brigade, also in Palestine.

In 1948, he became an Assistant Commandant at a school that taught about land and air warfare. Later, in 1950, he worked as a Deputy Adjutant General for the British forces in the Far East.

Leading Divisions

In 1953, Francis Rome became the General Officer Commanding (the main leader) of the 16th Airborne Division. This was a large group of soldiers trained for airborne operations.

From 1956, he was the Commandant of the British Sector in Berlin. This meant he was the top British military officer in charge of that part of Berlin. He retired from the army in 1959. He also served as the colonel of the Royal Fusiliers.

Family Life

In 1936, Francis Rome married Sybil Parry Carden.
