Early Life and Family

Francis Scott was born on December 21, 1626. His father was Walter Scott, who was the 1st Earl of Buccleuch. His mother was Lady Mary Hay. She was the daughter of another important noble, Francis Hay, the 9th Earl of Erroll.

Becoming an Earl

When Francis was only seven years old, his father passed away in 1633. Because of this, young Francis inherited his father's title. He became the 2nd Earl of Buccleuch. An 'Earl' was a high-ranking noble in Scotland. This title often came with land and important duties.

His Family Life

On July 25, 1646, Francis Scott got married. His wife was Lady Margaret Leslie. She was the daughter of John Leslie, the 6th Earl of Rothes. They started a family together.

His Children

Francis and Margaret had four children:

  • Mary Scott, who later became the 3rd Countess of Buccleuch.
  • Walter Scott, Baron Scott of Buccleuch, who sadly died when he was a baby.
