Early Life and Career
Paquiro first wanted to become a surgeon. However, he had to change his plans. His family faced money problems, and he could no longer get help from a rich sponsor. Instead of working in his family's business, he decided to become a bullfighter.
Changing Bullfighting Forever
Paquiro became one of the most famous names in bullfighting history. He created many of the rules that bullfighters still follow today. He also set up the order for how bullfights should happen. Paquiro also introduced the "Traje de Luz," which means "Suit of Lights." This is the special, shiny suit that bullfighters wear even now.
A Star in the Ring
Around 1840, Paquiro was a huge star in Madrid, Spain. He earned a lot of money for his skills. For example, he was paid 6,000 Spanish reals for fighting five bulls. Two years later, he earned 2,000 reals for each bull he fought. Until he retired in 1848, he was the most important bullfighter in all of Spain.
Later Years and Legacy
After retiring, Paquiro tried to return to bullfighting. However, he could not perform as well as he used to. His very last fight was on July 21, 1850, in Madrid. He fought a bull named "Rumbón." Paquiro died at age 47 in his hometown. Today, there is a museum in Chiclana de la Frontera dedicated to him.
