Francisco Peralta del Campo (born in 1837 in Seville, Spain – died in 1897 in Rome, Italy) was a Spanish painter. He is best known for his paintings that show everyday life (called costumbrista art) and scenes inspired by the Middle East or North Africa (called Orientalist art).

A Young Artist's Journey

Francisco started learning art at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. His teachers were well-known artists like Antonio Cabral Bejarano and Eduardo Cano.

From 1864 to 1866, Francisco showed his paintings at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Spain. He presented works like La Primavera (Spring), Un Frutero (Fruit Seller), and Un pensamiento (Contemplation). He even received an honorable mention for his talent.

Life in Italy

In 1868, Francisco traveled to Italy with his friends, who were also artists, José Villegas Cordero and Luis Jiménez Aranda. He loved Italy so much that he stayed there for the rest of his life. He lived mostly in Rome, but he also spent a lot of time in Venice.

Many of his paintings were "casacones." These were small paintings made for homes. They often showed fancy scenes from the 17th and 18th centuries, like people in courtly settings. This style was very popular at the time.

Famous Works

You can see some of Francisco Peralta del Campo's paintings in important art museums. His works Caballero de Casaca (Gentleman in a Jacket) and Retrato de señora con el fondo rojo (Portrait of a Woman with Red Background) are at the Museo del Prado in Spain. Another major painting, Firma de esponsales (Signing the Engagement Contract), is part of the Colección Bellver [es] art collection.
