Life and Studies

Francisco Pons y Boigues was born in 1861 in a town called Carcaixent in Spain. His family was not wealthy. He started his education at a religious school in Valencia.

A very important event in his life was meeting Francisco Codera y Zaidín. Codera was a famous Arabist. He became Pons y Boigues's teacher and encouraged him to study at the Faculty of Arts in Madrid. There, another well-known teacher, Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo, taught him. Francisco Pons y Boigues finished his studies in 1885.

He wrote many books and articles during his life. These works helped people learn more about Arabic history and culture in Spain. He died in 1899.

Francisco Pons y Boigues wrote several notable books. These include:

  • Apuntes de un viaje por Argelia y Túnez (1888): This means 'Notes of a trip through Algeria and Tunisia'. It was about his travels and observations.
  • Notes on the Mozarabic writings of Toledo that are preserved in the National Historical Archive (1897): This book looked at old writings from Toledo, Spain, written by Christians who lived under Muslim rule.
  • Essay Biobibliography on Arabic-Spanish historians and geographers (1898): This was a big project. It listed and described Arabic and Spanish historians and geographers.
  • He also worked on texts by famous Arab thinkers like Ibn Hazm and Ibn Tufail. One of these was Hayy ibn Yaqdhan by Ibn Tufail, published in 1900.
