Francisco Rico Manrique (born April 28, 1942 – died April 26, 2024) was a famous Spanish philologist. A philologist is someone who studies language and literature, especially old texts. He spent his life studying and sharing classic Spanish writings.

Francisco Rico Manrique learned from important teachers like José Manuel Blecua and Martín de Riquer. He became a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. There, he taught about Spanish literature from the Middle Ages.
In 1987, he became a member of the Royal Spanish Academy. This is a very important group that helps protect and guide the Spanish language. He was also part of other famous academies in Lisbon, Italy, and Britain.
On March 13, 1986, he was chosen for a special seat, called "Seat p", in the Royal Spanish Academy. He officially started this role on June 4, 1987.
His Work with Books
Rico Manrique worked on many old Spanish books. He helped edit and publish classic works from the Middle Ages and the "Siglo de Oro" (Golden Age) of Spanish literature. This made these important stories and poems easier for people to read and study.
He also wrote many studies about literature from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. These studies helped people understand more about these historical periods. One of his big projects was editing a nine-volume series called Historia y Crítica de la Literatura Española. This means "History and Criticism of Spanish Literature."
Later, he led a project called the Classical Library series. This project aimed to publish important Spanish classic books. He started the "Centro para la Edición de los Clásicos Españoles" (Center for the Editing of Spanish Classics) and helped it grow.
Awards and Recognition
Francisco Rico Manrique received several important awards for his work. In 1998, he won the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize. This award celebrates people who have made big contributions to Spanish culture.
In 2004, he received the Ramón Menéndez Pidal National Research Prize. This award recognized his excellent research in his field.
Francisco Rico Manrique passed away in Barcelona on April 26, 2024. He was 81 years old.
