A Glimpse into the Past
This historic house was built a long, long time ago, sometime between 1810 and 1820. The builders used a special method called pièce-sur-pièce à coulisse. This is a French-Canadian way of building with logs. Imagine fitting logs together like a puzzle, sliding them into grooves in upright posts. This made the walls very strong.
The house became even bigger during the 1820s. This happened after it was bought by Francois Vertefeuille. He was the person the house is named after! Francois Vertefeuille had moved to Prairie du Chien in 1809. He came from a region known as The Canadas, which was a part of British North America at the time.
