Frank Calloway facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Frank Calloway (July 2, 1915 – September 1, 2014) was an American artist who taught himself how to draw. He lived in a special care facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for many years. His artwork mostly showed scenes from the old American South, like farms and country life, just as he remembered them from his childhood. He drew on large sheets of butcher paper using crayons, pens, and markers. These long drawings, called scrolls, were either 24 or 36 inches tall and could be anywhere from 8 to over 60 feet long! Even though he sometimes said he was much older, experts found that he was actually born in 1915.

Frank Calloway's Artistic Journey

Frank Calloway always enjoyed drawing. But he started creating a lot more art after taking an art class in the 1980s. Many of his drawings showed country scenes from the Southern United States where he grew up. Some of these were shown in an art exhibit in 2008 at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland.
