Frank A. Silva (born October 31, 1950 – died September 13, 1995) was an American set dresser and actor. He is most famous for playing the spooky spirit named Killer BOB in the TV series Twin Peaks.
Early Life and Career
Frank Silva studied lighting design at San Francisco State University. After college, he worked behind the scenes in movies. He was a prop master and set decorator on several films. This included movies directed by David Lynch, like Dune and Wild at Heart.
Becoming Killer BOB
Silva was working as a set dresser on David Lynch's TV show Twin Peaks. One day, while Silva was working in the house used for the character Laura Palmer, David Lynch noticed him. Lynch suddenly thought that Silva might be good for a part in the show.
He asked Silva if he was an actor, and Silva said yes. Lynch then filmed a scene of Silva crouching at the foot of Laura Palmer's bed. Silva had no idea where this scene would fit into the show.
Later, while filming another scene, the camera operator noticed Silva accidentally appeared in a reflection. Lynch saw this as a sign. He decided to keep the shot as it was. This is how the character of Killer BOB was created. BOB is a dark spirit who haunts Laura Palmer. Silva appeared as BOB many times in the Twin Peaks series. He also played the character in the 1992 movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
Other Appearances
Frank Silva also appeared in the music video for the song "Only" by the band Anthrax.
Later Life and Legacy
Frank Silva passed away on September 13, 1995, when he was 44 years old. He died due to health complications. The second episode of the newer Twin Peaks series was dedicated to him.
