Frank Gordon Thorpe (born February 15, 1885 – died March 30, 1967) was an important Australian public servant. He worked for the government for many years. From 1936 to 1947, he held a very important job as the Public Service Commissioner. This meant he helped manage all the people who worked for the Australian government.

Frank Thorpe's Early Life and Career

Frank Thorpe was born on February 15, 1885. He was born in a place called Kooreh, which is in Victoria, Australia.

Frank started working for the Australian government in 1901. This was very early in Australia's history as a nation. He was one of the first people to join the new Australian Public Service. His first job was as a personal clerk. He worked for the person in charge of the Post Office Department.

When World War I started, Frank wanted to join the army. However, he was not allowed to go and fight. Instead, he was asked to work for the Department of Defence. This was a temporary job helping with the war effort from home.

In 1921, Frank moved to a new department. He joined the Prime Minister's Department. Here, he worked as a senior clerk. This meant he had more responsibility.

Becoming Public Service Commissioner

In 1923, Frank Thorpe joined the Commonwealth Public Service Board. This board helps manage all government workers. He started as an assistant-inspector.

Later, in 1937, he was chosen for a very big job. He became the Public Service Commissioner. This meant he was in charge of how the government hired and managed its employees. He kept this important role during World War II. This was a very busy time for the government.

Frank Thorpe retired in 1947. He had worked for the government for 49 years! Many important people attended his farewell party. This showed how much they respected him.

After he retired, Frank still helped the government. For two years starting in 1953, he was the Chairman of a special board. This board helped with appeals for promotions in the Overseas Telecommunications Commission.

Frank Thorpe passed away in Canberra in 1967.

Awards and Recognition

In June 1936, he was given the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire. This award recognizes people who have done great things.

In June 1939, he received another high honor. He was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. He received this award while he was the Chairman of the Public Service Board.
