The Franklin H. Walker House was a large, beautiful home in Detroit, Michigan. It was located at 2730 East Jefferson Avenue. People also knew it as Doctor's Hospital later on.

This house was very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This list helps protect special buildings in the United States. Sadly, the house was torn down in 1998. At that time, it was the biggest old house left on Jefferson Avenue.

What the House Looked Like

The Franklin H. Walker House was a very big building. It had two and a half stories. It was made from brown brick and rough stone. The house looked like an old castle. It had a style called Neo-Jacobean. This means it looked like buildings from the 1600s.

The house was not shaped like a simple box. It had different parts sticking out. One corner had a round tower with a pointy roof. This made it look like a medieval castle. Another part had a two-story window section. The roof was covered with tiles. It was a very unique and grand home.

History of the Walker House

This impressive house was built in 1896. It was made for Franklin H. Walker. Franklin was the son of a famous businessman, Hiram Walker. Hiram Walker started a large company that made spirits. Franklin became the president of his father's company.

Franklin Walker chose a well-known architect, George D. Mason, to design his home. The house was special because of its huge size. It also used many different building materials. Its old-fashioned, castle-like design made it stand out.

Over time, the house changed. It was turned into a hospital. It was called Doctor's Hospital. The building was changed a lot to fit its new use. It served as a hospital until 1980. Then, in 1998, the Franklin H. Walker House was torn down.
