Frans Derks (born November 1, 1930 – died September 25, 2020) was a famous Dutch football referee and a leader in sports. He was known for his unique style on the field and his important roles in different sports clubs.

Frans Derks' Early Life

Frans Derks was born in 1930 in a town called Vaals, in the Netherlands. He went to a special boarding school and later studied mechanical engineering in Zürich, Switzerland. After finishing his studies, he became a manager at a cleaning company. But Frans was also a very creative person! He was a quiz show host, a singer (he even recorded a song with a famous football player named Willem van Hanegem), and a writer.

His Exciting Referee Career

Frans Derks was a football referee from the 1950s to the 1970s. He was known for being very lively and speaking his mind. People often remembered him for wearing tight shorts during matches!

Dutch football players really liked him because he didn't stop the game too often. He also didn't show many yellow or red cards. He even joked that he had "no space left in his shorts for cards!" This made games flow better and kept the excitement going.

Frans Derks had a special promise he made to his father. He claimed he never refereed a match where a German team won. This shows how much he cared about his promises and his family.

Frans Derks as a Sports Leader

After his time as a referee, Frans Derks continued to be involved in sports. He became the chairman, or leader, of the football club FC Dordrecht. He held this important role from 1995 until 2003. He was also a board member at another football club called NAC Breda.

Besides football, he was also the chairman of a volleyball club named Brevok for many years, from 1978 to 1994.

In 2009, Frans Derks was given a special honor. He was named an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau. This award recognized all the great things he did for football in the Netherlands.

Frans Derks passed away in September 2020 in Breda, after a short illness.
